• Debugging “Java Server Faces” is a nightmare

Yesterday, I heard from 2 teachers they wanted to remove PHP from the MCT curriculum. So now, the new academic year has started en it seems that PHP is reduced to a total of 3 lessons (during 2MCT)…

Also, when you do a specialization in web technology during the final year, you don’t have a PHP course anymore since it’s been replaced by Ruby On Rails.

Why? This is what they had to say:

Big company’s and corporations told us they had no need for PHP. It’s too simple, dirty and too hard to maintain for their needs.

Are these companies underestimating the future of PHP or not?
I think there are several reasons to continue teaching PHP in MCT, and several not to.

Pros:

• PHP is all over the place. Most of the websites you come across on the web are written in PHP. And it will stay that way, for many years to come.
• Hosting PHP on a Linux server is cheap and easy. It’s affordable even for small busnisses.
• The amount of PHP-frameworks using the MVC-principals is growing fast, and they are getting better and bigger. They make PHP-websites a lot faster to create, a lot easier to maintain and easier to expand on.
• Not all MCT-students will end up in a big company. (right?)

Cons:

• Once you have a decent knowledge of several languages/frameworks (like J2EE, ASP.NET and RoR), it’s pretty easy to learn PHP yourself.
• There’s not “that” much you can learn about PHP in school. Most of it will come through experience. J2EE, .NET and RoR on the other hand are much more complex, capacious and broad. So they are a lot harder to learn by yourself.
• Testing.
• Reusing business logic code from company programs in your website, without rewriting it in another language.

So I’m not really against their decision about PHP in MCT, but I do think PHP has a bright future (even for bigger business applications).

I wrote my previous post in English, because I thought it would be useful for a lot of people. And from now on, I’ll write all my posts in English.
It’s not my native language, so there’ll probably be some mistakes. Feel free to correct me in the comments or send me a mail.

The next couple of months I’m going to blog about school, and as this is my last year in “Multimedia and communication technology” and my specialisation is “Web Technology” that’ll be the main topic ( not the only topic ). I’ll be posting additions to the lessons, discussing some interesting topics and things I come across on the web.

Recently bought a Dell Vostro and I really like this black beauty. As on all new Dells there’s this media-center-thing called “MediaDirect” that you can start without starting your full OS. But the problem is: this thing can’t play shit. It lacks a lot of codecs so you won’t be able to play a LOT of your videos.

Herinneringen aan de tijd toen we nog klein waren, wie heeft ze niet? Nog geen zorgen zoals de grote mensen, maar toch was alles een avontuur. Op die periode wil ik de komen weken af en toe eens terug kijken.

Ik begin met iets waar ik het een tijdje geleden over had met een aantal vrienden: tekenfilms van weleer.

Wie weet er nog tekenfilms uit deze tijd en kan wat aanvullen?

Weekend zit er op, en tijd om aan mijn 3de week bij Netlash te beginnen.

Maar hoe was week 2?

Wel, maandag begonnen met het debuggen van Plate. Dat ging allemaal heel vlot, en ik heb mijn eerste klasse overerving gedaan in PHP. Niks speciaal, net hetzelfde principe als in Java etc.

Ook kwam de Tour langs in Gent, wat mijn vervoer naar daar wat in de war bracht. Geen trams in de voormiddag, ik snap nog altijd niet waarom… Na een rustige dag werken stapte ik samen met Davy naar het station (lekker droog, dankzij zijn paraplu…) en konden we het slagveld in Gent aanschouwen.

Woensdag was ik klaar met Plate en mocht ik weer beginnen met structuurdocumenten te maken, bye bye PHP Gelukkig vrijdag iets meer uitdaging: opstellen van de structuur voor een webshop. Verder geen bijzonderheden.

De week liep heel rustig naar zijn einde met een half-leeg kantoor: Johan vertrokken naar Dour, Davy naar Duitsland en Karen zat ziek thuis.

Weekend gebruikt om eens goed uit te slapen, bij mijn vriendin te zijn, filmpje te kijken en aan code te beginnen voor mijn nieuw portfolio. En mij voorgenomen de komende week te beginnen studeren voor mijn java-certificaat examen, we gaan er helemaal voor.

Nu mijn bedje in om morgen met een frisse geest aan een nieuwe week te beginnen. Laat maar komen!

Dacht van er eens vroeg in te kruipen vandaag, zeker omdat ik van plan ben morgen een trein vroeger naar Gent te nemen. Maar kan de slaap niet vatten, te veel dingen spelen in mijn hoofd.

Trein vroeger om 2 redenen

1. Blijkbaar rijden er hoop treinen niet vanaf 7 juli tot het einde van de zomervakantie. En laat de trein die best uitkwam voor mij daar net ook bij horen…
2. Morgen komt een rit van de Tour de France aan in Gent, ik heb zo een voorgevoel dat de treinen en trammen nog voller gaan zitten dan normaal. Zal dus zeker wel iets te bloggen hebben over mijn avonturen morgen…

In hoeverre de pc waar dit op draait verbonden is met een netwerk/internet weet ik niet, maar het getuige alvast niet van professionaliteit.

Ga nu nog een poging doen wat te slapen, zodat ik morgen fris genoeg ben om met het debuggen van Plate te beginnen. Doe me trouwens denken een onderwerp die ik hier ook eens moet aansnijden, maar dat zal ook voor morgen zijn.

Mijn eerste week bij de mannen van Netlash zit er al op, de tijd vliegt. Structuur-documenten zijn af momenteel, dus kunnen we maandag in de code vliegen. We gaan er voor…
